Report of activities to EFMI Council

for the period August 1999 to August 2000
Presented on August 27, 2000, EFMI Council, Hannover

Selection of members

At the last conference in Ljubljana Mrs Darja Ovijac joins our Working Group and she is representing Slovenia.

Objectives of the WG

Ø       To support nurses and nursing organisations in the European countries with information and contacts and the field of informatics

Ø       To offer nurses opportunities to build contact networks within the informatics field. This could be accomplished by arranging sessions, workshops and tutorials in connection with the Medical Informatics European (MIE) conferences or by arranging separate meetings.

Ø       To support the education of nurses with respect to informatics and computing.

Ø       To support research and developmental work in the field and promote publishing of achieved results.

Recent activities

The last 2 events of the WG5 are the following:

Ø       Workshop and tutorial MIE’99 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Ø       Active participation in NI’2000 Auckland New Zealand.

For the last three years we had a working strategy. Concerning

  1. Aid the development of health informatics courses for pre and post registration nurses, midwives and other health care professionals.
  2. Promote the development of minimum datasets, based on existing data for comparison between EFMI countries of the numbers and grades nurses and nursing activities.
  3. Press for nursing needs to be included in the electronic health record
  4. Support the development of research into nursing informatics issues particularly multi-site and across country boundaries
  5. Identify the needs of nursing management for information
  6. Continue to disseminate information about health informatics and the work of EFMI WG5

This plan was really too ambitious to be reached but nevertheless several county’s members of our WG are directly involved into developments corresponding to our aims. Country reports should show better what is in process.

Currently the WG5 Website is down but will be soon reactivated country report will be published there.

Future activities

This year a new chair should be elected and will take new opportunities to do a better job promoting nursing informatics across Europe.

All information will be published in the Website. As we have to reinstall the site on a new server the address will be sent to each EFMI member and of course to the EFMI web master.

Conclusion

WG5 were very active in 1998 and 1999. A slowing down of activities in the beginning of 2000 occurred due to WG5 chairman professional overload.

Swiss annual report 1999-2000

Special Interest Group-Nursing Informatics Switzerland (SIG-NI).

Annual meeting

The annual meeting of SIG-NI took place, together with the Swiss Society for Medical Informatics (SSIM) annual congress on Mai 2000 in Lausannel. Our group organize the 3 days event  with 58 scientific papers and more than 180 participant.

Nursing informatics curriculum

As Switzerland does not have either a course in Nursing informatics or one in medical informatics, SSIM set up a special group led by Dr Martin Denz. The group has prepare the rules for a curriculum in medical informatics where nursing informatics is fully included. Patrick Van Gele and Patrick Weber are involved in this working group for SIG-NI. First courses are ready.

Nursing Data

After more than one year work report concerning Nursing Data built by Anne Berthou is available on the Healthcare Economy Institute (ISE) website. They will prepare the future actions to be taken by Switzerland in order to collect together with the medical data, nursing data for expressing the healthcare activity given to patients. This action is the result of several years of action by the SIG-NI group.

Nomenclature and Classification

For several years Rudolf Widmer and his team were working on the evaluation of the nursing classifications and nomenclatures. They were studying and testing several of them. There is a Swiss usergroup for ICNP really active and in contactg with the German usergroup of ICNP.

Website SIG-NI

The website of SIG-NI available all information about our group are published. Take time to visit www.swissnurse.ch

Israel annual report 2000

Summary of Yearly Activities of the Israeli Nursing Informatics Forum - ?2000

The nursing informatics forum was established in 1999, under the auspices of the Israeli Organization for Technology and Informatics, by a group of Israeli nurses who are interested in taking an active part in the development and implementation of information services in the countries hospitals. The participating nurses come from a variety of hospitals from all over Israel.

During the past year, the forum choose a chairperson, established a schedule for regular meetings, defined expectations and began working on a job description for the informatics nurse.

summary of the past years’ activities:

June 2000 - Nursing informatics workshop – Professor Marion Ball chaired the workshop that focused on the ways and means of developing nursing informatics in its early stages.

September 2000 – The official website of the Israeli Ministry of Health (WWW.HEALTH.GOV.IL) opened a site for Nursing Informatics (chat).

September 2000 – The group began work on identifying the various informatics programs that are presently being used by nurses in Israeli hospitals.

The forum is planning visits between hospitals as a chance for exchange of ideas and further development.

The various group members are working to acquire literature relevant to nursing informatics.

December 2000 – We are planning on opening the first course in Israel for management of information systems. The course will be run as a pilot for forum members.

December 2000 – Presentation of the forums’ activities in the Annual Israeli Nursing Conference.
