EFMI Council meeting, Saint-Malo by Patrick Weber,
Chairman of the working group

Selection of members

Recruitment is difficult today, we have to work more on this side and find a way to attract nurses from different countries to join the working group.

Vice president and secretary

In Budapest we had the election of the vice president and the secretary, mentioned here below.

Objectives of the group

Recent activities

The last 2 events of the NursIE were the following:

We had a very successful tutorial and a workshop in Budapest together with IMIA (International Medical Informatics Association) SIG-NI (Special Interest Group Nursing Informatics) with the help of the Hungarian Ministry of Health allowing nurses to participate at the tutorial.

Several county’s members of our WG are directly involved into developments corresponding to our aims please look at country reports on the Websitewww.nicecomputing.ch/nieurope

Finland

Research

The National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health (STAKES) has focused on finding out what needs to be done in terms of nursing classifications in Finland. The project was started in 1998 with two main tasks:

1) the description and analysis of existing nursing terminologies and minimum data sets and
2) to find out the need for nursing terminologies in Finland. The description and analysis is done on theoretical basis and the need will be determined by the research with specific aim to describe

- the need for information and terminologies in nursing in Finland
- the use for nursing informatics and terminologies in Finland
- the education of nursing informatics and terminologies in Finland

- the developments and research done in terms of nursing informatics and terminologies in Finland.

Based on before mentioned conclusions and suggestions are made for clinical practice, management, education and research in order to enhance nursing informatics and terminologies. The reports will be finished in some months.

Some Universities in Finland have networked and organized the meetings for research assessment and discussion in Information technology for social and healthcare. The annual meeting took place in Joensuu in June 2002 where several nursing and multi-disciplinary research reports were presented.

During the past time period doctoral dissertations focused on nursing informatics have been published at Finnish universities. Evaluation of nursing intensity on special care units by Marja-Leena Pulkkinen, Di-anoigostic system by Raili Ala-Haavisto, and Modelling of nursing interventions by Anneli Ensio. Some other doctoral dissertations concerning; diagnoses, interventions and outcomes in intensive nursing care; diagnoses, interventions and outcomes of tarsal injures patients and interventions in perioperative nursing will be finished in the near future.

National development activities

The Foundation of Finnish Nursing Education has started a project on nursing vocabulary for information retrieval. The project is based on MeSH-terms, which are translated and defined in Finnish. The advantage of the vocabulary is two-fold: first the library personnel are able to classify nursing research based on the terms and their definitions in Finnish and Swedish and secondly nurses are able to search research literature by the terms. The further aim is to compile a nursing research database The work for terms collection is going on and the vocabulary will be in use in 2002.

A large project “Macro Pilot” organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, aims to improve the services of social and health care with information technology and network. Nursing is one important part of the project. The final report of the project will be published by 2002. Actions to spread the ideas of the project have started around the country.

STAKES (National Development Centre for Welfare and Health) in cooperation with the professional organizations in health care will translate the ICF latest version in Finnish.

Education

The first Social and Health Informatics Master’s Programme in Finland started at Kuopio University in the autumn 2000. The three years programme is based on the recommendations of IMIA WG 1 for informatics education. Kuopio University offers also multi-disciplinary continuing education modules of informatics for people working in social and health care.

Yearly Summary of Activities of the Israeli Nursing Informatics Forum
Ayala Gonen - Chairman

This year marks the third year of our forums activities.

Vision

The Israeli informatics group is the premier group working to promote the use of information technology in the nursing field. Members’ are involved in the planning, development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of clinical information systems in addition to in-service computer training for staff members.

Objectives

1. Advance the use of computer technology for nurses as a means for improving nursing efficiency.
2. Increase nursing awareness of the field of nursing informatics.
3. Integrate the use of information technology as a part of the business of nursing on a national level.
4. Promote the nursing profession through the development of clinical information systems based on current nursing processes and resources.

Report of Activities – 2002

1. Second Information Technology Course for Nurses. Thirty-six nurses from all over Israel completed this 60-hour course that is fully accredited by the Ministry of Health. A pamphlet was published compiling the various projects developed by the nurses taking part in both courses. The third course is due to begin this coming November-2002.

2. Survey to determine the effectiveness of the course. A survey was taken to determine the extent of the participants continuing activity in the field of nursing informatics after their completion of the course. Results will be used a basis for coming courses.

3. Survey to determine current clinical information systems for nurses. Nursing directors were interviewed in order to compile a list of all the nursing applications currently in use in Israel. The results are presently being organized and evaluated.

4. Intensive Care Nursing Conference . This past March-2002, the conference focused on information technology. Forum members acted as advisors and participated in organizing the conference and as guest lecturers.

5. Israeli Medical Information Technology Conference. Nurses who are actively involved in the development and promotion of clinical information systems presented six projects at the nursing informatics session. In general attendance by nurses was high at the conference.

6. Job description for nursing informaticians. The working group prepared a job description for those working in the field of nursing informatics in order to meet the requirements for a commission by the Ministry of Health.

7. Nursing leadership active in information technology on a national level. As a member of the general council and medical committee of the Israeli Organization for Technology and Informatics, Mrs Ayala Gonen, nursing informatics chairperson continues takes an active part in committee meetings.

8. Website. Inclusion of Nursing Informatics in the website of the Israeli Organization for Technology and Informatics by the end of 2002.

9. Nursing publications. Two nursing articles were published in the most recent newsletter of the Israeli Organization for Technology and Informatics. Dr. Yardena Kol reported on nursing classifications while Mrs Ayala Gonen described the Israeli Nursing Informatics activities.

Annual report from Swiss Nursing Informatics Group

Patrick Weber Swiss representative at IMIA SIG_NI and EFMI NursIE

Swiss Nursing Informatics Group is very active. The present summary concerns 2002 and 2003. President or secretary if needed could give more information. The website is accessible at www.swissnurse.ch. As president of the Working Group 5 Nursing Informatics Europe of EFMI (European Federation for Medical Informatics) you may find also information about Nursing Informatics of EFMI at http://www.nicecomputing.ch/nieurope.

In 2002 members of our group actively organized the 1st European Nursing Informatics congress in Zürich in September 2002 ENI2002.

A specific publication about Nursing Informatics is published by Swiss Society of Medical Informatics journal.

The 11th Summer School of Nursing Informatics is organized in Geneva August 9th to 16th 2003. Information is available at come.to/essoni

The 2nd European Nursing Informatics congress will be in Frankfurt Germany in September 2003 see
www.pr-internet.com/lernwelten2003/frankfurt/aktuelles.asp where we will be very active.

Our group intends to candidate for NI2009 organization in Geneva, pre-budget and several contacts are already made.

We have three Internet groups active these are: network for nursing informatics, network for nursing data, and network for ICNP users group. Development of international classification is followed (ICF, ICNP, NIC, NOC,…). A Swiss classification called LEP (Leistung Erfassung der Pflege) is now used all over Switzerland. The purpose of this classification is to collect daily nursing activity and measure the nursing time allowing workload management in nursing.http://www.lep.ch/Language/Englishframe.htm

NURSING data project is continuing and prototype of the program to collect the data is available. Follow the progress at http://www.hospvd.ch/public/ise/nursingdata/index.htm.
